Descendants of LT. Daniel Cressey

FIRST GENERATION

1. LT. Daniel Cressey was born on 11 Jul 1698 in Salem, Royal Side, MA.1 He was christened on 16 Jul 1698 in Salem, Royal Side, MA.2 He was a Cordwainer in 1720 in Royalside, Salem, Massachusetts.3 Shoemaker by trade and probably a tanner of leather He resided Salem in 1720 in Salem, Essex, MA.4 Lived on the 13-acre lot with a house and barn thereon, which his father bought of John Green in 1695. He resided Andover in 1737 in Andover, MA.5 Sold out and bought land in Methuen which became Salem NH He resided Salem, Rockingham, NH in 1740 in Salem, Rockingham NH.6 First lived in Methuen which became Salem, NH. He served in the military between 1744 and 1748 in Louisberg, Cape Breton, Island.7 Was a member of Rogers' Rangers and served as a Lieutenant in the war between France and England. He was elected as Selectman on 18 Nov 1744 in Salem, Rockingham NH.8 At a town meeting on this date he and William Richar(d)son, Elizer Whiyten (Whiting) and Daniel Cressey were elected selectman He died before 2 Jul 1749 in Salem, Rockingham, NH.9,10,11,12 "About 1740 he moved to Connecticut. Nothing further is as yet known of him" according to Cressey genealogy, This is contradicted by Salem NH town records and the diary of Benj. Cressy. Benj. states that he learned from a letter written to Polly (Mary) Cressy Ashley by her father Daniel, stating that "he had got money enough to buy the farm joining his and that he should be home at such a time." The next news was that Daniel was shot through with a ball by one Lieutenant James Hadley. Daniel and Hadley had their property together or in company. Thus Sarah was left a widow with nine children. The Cressey genealogy is also disputed by Salem NH town records which show him as a tax collector and selectman in 1744. Sally Cressey is listed as a tax payer in 1754. In the Salem NH church records it states that Ebeneezer, was baptised 2 July 1749. The sponsor was Widow of Daniel, which means that he died before this date.

The Cressey genealogy by Ernest Cressey substantiates the story of his murder by Lieutenant James Hadley. He was buried in Salem, Rockingham, NH.13 No burial place found.

He was buried in Bradford, Merrimack , NH. Handwritten addition to page 9 of Blodgette which states that his only marriage was to Abigail Allen, "1st married to Eunice Morgan May 9 1754 by Rev. Abner Bayley." According to Benj. Cressy's diary "when I was about one year old my father had his house burnt." The diary continues "soon after he married his second wife my father lost all he had by his brother in law who was in trade. This subjected him to the trial of moving to Hopkinton with his family. I was about 9 years old when we moved to Hopkinton, NH. I lived with my father and worked for other men." In 1779 Benj. was 18 and he joined the Army for "one year". He was married to Eunice Morgan (daughter of Moses Morgan and Patience Ellenwood) on 9 May 1754 in Salem, Rockingham, NH.28,59 Unable to find recording in Salem NH Town Records60,28 Eunice Morgan61,28 was born on 13 Mar 1731 in MA.62 No proof for this birth. Eunice Cressey wife of Daniel is named in the will of Moses Morgan. She died in 1863 in Salem, Rockingham NH. Death was probably Salem, NH. According to Hunt family records, Benj. Cressey she died when his youngest sister was just a few days old. She was buried in Salem, Rockingham NH. According to Benj. Cressy's diary, "My father Daniel Cressy resided in New Salem NH where his father lived. He married for his first wife Eunice Morgan on the 9th of May 1754" There is no proof as to whom her parents are. If you figure she would have been around 20 years old when she married Daniel then her birth years was around 1734.

There is no recorded child for the individuals assumed to be her parents in 1734. She is named as "my beloved daughter Eunice Cressey" in the will of Moses Morgan.

Worthy Lady, Tis with greatest pleasure that I now take pen in hand to write to one whom I esteem above all women although you may read this with indifference, 'tis written in sincerity. True our acquaintance was short but I hope it will be lasting. My mind has been very much agitated on the subject of our discourse. I have not altered m mind in respect to what we talked of, although perhaps you are of a different opinion than what you were when I saw you, if you spoke your mind. There is not one of the female sex that draws my attention save yourself Anna dear. I sen you my mind, deny me not of yours. I must conclude and subscribe myself your faithful friend. Benjamin Cressey.

Her response: Sir I now sit down to write a few unworthy lines to one I expected to be my friend. I am very happy sir, that you should take so much notice of me as to write me a few lines. Sir, you make think I am bold in writing to one that I have had so little acquaintance with, but it was your desire and my satisfation to write to my friend, so I must conclude subscribing myself, your loving freid and well wisher. He resided Newbury in 1840 in Newbury, Orange, VT.270 He died on 23 Sep 1844 in Hopkinton, Hillsborough, NH.271,141 Death of Allison Wrifford recorded age 67 at time of death Abel lived in Boston ca 1809 although no mention of him is found in City directories.

Letter from his 1/2 brother Moses who was living with him, was sent from Cambridge.

Abel was teaching penmanship 1809 when he wrote his mother. Apparently there was some kind of rift or argument between he and his brother. His brother Moses had written to Uncle Benjamin Cressey that by now no doubt he had heard "Mr.A.W's side of the story." It appears that Abel took the role of "in charge" of the family. He gave instructions to his mother about dealing with lambs, wool, cattle and other matters in his absence. In a letter from a cousin, Elvira Cressy to her sister, she states that "Aunt Hand (Elizabeth Cressey,Hunt, Wrifford, Hoyt, Hand) has received a letter from Mr. Wrifford that he is not expected to live and that his daughter is dead." Abel was also known as Allison From the Hist. of Concord, NH "Allison Wrifford, of Boston, whose writing-books were sold here as early as 1810, came to Concord in 1831 announcing himself as the 'veteran chirographer, who by long practice and peculiar aptitude has possessed himself of the secret of successful instruction, by seizing those happy moments, when the attention of pupils can be caught and successfully employed.' He taught in Concord and vicinity for several years, marrying in 1834, Mrs. Mary Greeley of Hopkinton. He died in the latter town ten years later, aged sixty four. Concord papers speak of him as being 'the first in his profession in the United States, and known in all New England and many of the Middle and Southern states as an elegant penman, an accomplished gentleman, and a popular and successful teacher.'

This is given in the naming of heirs of James HOYT for the purpose of releasing a mortgage, made by James HOYT to a Ruth A. MILLER, Mortgage was paid in 1870, but apparently never released. From family records he was walking along and met a pack of wolves. He had no weapon, but he did have an umbrella. He opened and shut the umbrella several times, the wolves scattered and ran off. While he was at work for Aaron Thorp on this side of Eagleville, Jotham Williams and Jerry Wormer then living at Thorp's went deer hunting one day. They returned a little before sunset, but had killed no deer. Mr. Hoyt said he would try his skill. He took his gun and went abut half a mile in a different direction from the way they came, he came to an opening in the woods and saw two large deer. He fired his gun, and one deer fell and the other ran away. He made a rope of bark and drew the one he had killed home, as that was the common way to bring in a deer in those days. He said the other deer would be on the spot the next morning looking for its mate; he started early with his gun, found the deer and shot it. Thus he killed two deer without losing any time from work.
