John2,
Mighill1)
born February 4, 1838 in Columbus, Ohio,
married:
(1) 1865 Helen F. Carter, of Worthington, Ohio, who died in

(2) 1868 Julia Pettee Brooks of Roxbury, Massachusetts.
He left school when 14 and served four years, 1852-56, to learn
the printers' trade and was the first boy to carry papers in the
City of Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1861 he enlisted in Company
H, 2nd Minnesota Infantry, and served until June 16, 1865, when
he was honorably discharged. After the Civil War he worked at
Cambridge, Massachusetts on the University Press, 1866-7, went
to Des Moines, Iowa, and worked on the Des Moines "Register,"
and later to Mitchellville, Iowa, where he was editor and
proprietor of a newspaper. In 1873-5 he was assistant Index
Clerk of the House of Representatives in the
43rd Congress, Washington, D.C.
In 1889-93 he was assistant Librarian, U. S. Senate, and
prepared a catalogue of the tons of books from the beginning of
our government, and many missing volumes were found. By this
work of special appointment Mr. Cressey made the Senate Library
the best of its class in the world for reference, even ahead of
its two rivals -- Boston and the British Museum. He and his
